Hilarie Lambert
Hilarie Lambert is captured by things – by the architectural allure of old movie theaters, by the way the morning light illuminates a bird’s wing, or by the play of light and shadow on a fisherman’s face. Known for the vibrant flair and broad brushwork with which she approaches the vivacious energy of Charleston’s downtown, Lambert creates captivating urban landscapes for private collectors across the country. Fusing her background in graphic design with her abundant enthusiasm for the artistic process of revealing color, value, and beauty through paint, Lambert creates bold architectural portraits and glowing figurative studies. “While primarily a plein air painter, I love the figure.” A prolific painter, she captures her environment daily, painting in her studio in Charleston, SC, or en plein air depending on the weather. Lambert spent April 2009 painting in and around Paris, including the gardens of Monet at Giverny. In the fall of 2009 Hilarie took students to Italy and taught a seven-day plein air workshop in Venice. Originally from the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Lambert has called Charleston home for six years and lives there with her husband John.
A former graphic designer, Ms. Lambert has studied under Burton Silverman, Kim English, Scott Burdick, and John Burton.
"Ms. Lambert has developed a very recognizable style with her oils; part of this is in her approach to the application of paint on the canvas. The paint is laid down in what seem to be quick and loose, but strong brush strokes usually with a very generous amount of paint. This style gives the viewer a definite sense of the artist’s hand and vision at work in the finished piece. The range of mood and subject matter in her pieces is broad. Sometimes her pieces are done tongue in cheek with her sense of humor evident in the choice of titles and gestures in the figurative pieces; other times her paintings have a much more traditional and classic style while still rendering the pieces with her signature flair." Lambert exhibits refreshing confidence by approaching each blank canvas with a keenly trained eye for composition and perspective. She strongly believes her subjects’ inherent beauty is revealed not through the original glimpse that led her to them, but the meditative process of painting: its sweeping brushwork, its inevitable mistakes, its hidden tonalities, and most importantly its revelatory prowess. Lambert’s work has been featured in widely read publications ranging from Plein Air Magazine to American Art Collector. Her vibrant oil paintings have been featured in several One Woman Shows throughout the Southeast and honored with accolades numerous shows and competitions. Her most recent honors include:
